You wanna hear something ridiculous? Hunt down this album. This bit of arranged goodness has some incredible, live instrumental, performances on it. And it’s all for some old RPG called “Fortune Quest.” The artwork on the CD case should give you an idea of what you’re in for. Take the silliest tracks from Super Mario World, and multiply by that by ten. That’s Fortune Quest.
“Rock Paper Scissors” seems to spoof the old Batman theme song, which is hilarious. Track 11, as the title suggests, has some ridiculous yodeling. It actually sounds good, though. It’s really catchy stuff. When they cue the crowd cheering for him in his yodeling solo, I always crack up laughing.
Anzai and Saitoh did an amazing job with this soundtrack. Almost every track is great, but the sampled tracks are my favorites. Sampled voices in track 10 remind me of decent techno from the early ’90s, and the ending track’s silly chorus line (again) had me laughing in my seat. This album is really something special, something that fans of weird, obscure VGM should check out.
