Makai Senki Disgaea Portable Original Maxi Single

Review by · August 30, 2008

A couple of new songs were written and recorded for the PSP “port” (nearly a remake with all the new content) of Disgaea. Those songs were included on this maxi single, which came alongside the Japanese LE release of the PSP title (the complete Disgaea OST also came with the limited edition set).

The first track is a little 15 second jingle, the second track is a female vocal performance, and the third is a new instrumental track. Of the three tracks, the vocal “Nightmare Heroine” stands out as the clear winner. Performed by vocalist “Miki,” it showcases everything that makes a Tenpei Sato vocal track excellent. Peppy, fun, and packed with a somewhat darker style, this is the sort of thing that J-vocal lovers will adore. There’s a bit of a jazz influence, as the song has lots of horns and a wurlitzer keyboard (yea!). The song was a big surprise for me, and it ranks in my top three for all Disgaea vocal tracks (for those unaware, there are quite a few of them).

“How is the New Demon King’s Castle?” Is even more jazzy, making great use of mute trumpet and clarinet. It uses the same melody as the vocal track, but we hear more of a “big band” feel on this track.

The limited edition of Makai Senkai Disgaea Portable may be expensive, but with this *and* the OST thrown it, I’d say it’s worth it for any serious collector. I’m just happy these songs found some form of official release so I coudl talk about them here and not just in a game review.
