With the release of Tales of the Tempest for the Nintendo DS, the game uses a song from J-Pop star misono (lead vocalist of the former band DAY AFTER TOMORROW). Her first single, “VS,” was used as the opening song. Along with “VS,” her other work, “Glass no Kutsu” (Glass Shoes) is included along with non-vocal versions of the song for karaoke kicks. Amongst the J-Pop songs I’ve heard, I find these two to be quite impressive.
Being an opening song, “VS” is a solid choice as it’s full of spunk like an opening song should be. It managed to get me hooked when the vocals kept in. It provided a very dynamic and interesting melody and misono hit it well with the vocals. It can be a bit too upbeat and peppy which is a hit or miss with me, but the execution is very good. I am much more impressed with misono’s work then in her other Tales-related single, “Lovely Cat’s Eye.”
Slowing the pace down, “Glass no Kutsu” comes next and that was also a treat to listen. The melody was solid and misono sung very nice welcome. The song manages to keep it simple, even on the more upbeat parts, but kept it interesting with very good pacing. As good as the upbeat “VS” was, I find “Glass No Kutsu” a nice, relaxing counterpart.
Between her VS and Lovely Cat’s Eye singles, VS is the clear winner. While they are not the best J-Pop songs I’ve heard, they were much more interesting and enjoyable to listen. It’s a great example of misono’s talent and the single showcases what she’s capable of. J-Pop fans should definitely give this single a listen.
