Perfect Selection Snatcher & SD Snatcher

Review by · May 31, 2008

This little arranged album contains music from Snatcher and its freaky-looking brother “SD Snatcher.” Yes, the cover art tells the whole story. SD = Super Deformed, giant heads, silly anime style. They did a remake of Snatcher with all SD character art. Silly? Yes, most definitely. The majority of this arranged album has music written for SD Snatcher. So, as you would expect, we have some more light-hearted music happening on this particular album.

For example, we have two happy-go-lucky vocals on the disc. Tracks 4 and 6 are vocal tracks for two of the female characters. They aren’t great performances, but they are light and fun, which is exactly what Konami was going for with the whole SD Snatcher phenomenon so…mission accomplished!

The audio quality is that of a jam-band recording session with a lot of keyboard synth. That’s not a bad thing. The songs translate well. Consider track 7, “Triumphal Arch.” The music is clearly superior compared to, say, the original MSX audio, and while you can clearly hear which albums are recorded live and which are keyboard synth, the end result is that the music flows well together in a way that few can accomplish. Those few, of course, are Konami Kukeiha Club and Falcom’s Sound Team JDK. And what better way to come down off a powerhouse-high like that song than with a relaxing jazz odyssey? Yeah, you get what you ask for with this album, because “Sunrise” has some incredibly beautiful jazz work, especially on the piano. You will be pleased.

The only complaint I have about this album? It’s 35 minutes, and that’s a problem. This is some good music, and they should have included more. Fortunately, many more Snatcher arranged albums were released since the time of this album, so if you know where to look, you can really get your fill of Snatcher goodness. This is a very old album though, and it has seen no reprints.
