QuoVadis Game Soundtracks

Review by · January 21, 2007

An RPG/SLG hybrid originally released for Sega Saturn (then ported to PlayStation), QuoVadis takes the popular Japanese playing genre and sticks it in another popular Japanese realm: outer space. The artwork and style of the game are reminiscent of Macross: the music, however, is more like a Gundam soundtrack.

With the exception of a few occasional hard-rock, in-your-face tracks, the album is orchestral…almost militaristic, late romantic era orchestral, to be exact. A few of the tracks will comfortably lull you to sleep, but others may exhaust you into a state of boredom. The others, however, are quite inspirational.

Vocalist “Q.T.” lended her talent for the game’s theme songs. They stand in stark contrast to the orchestral album, incorporating standard J-Pop production style and other such silliness. These songs are alright, but to me, they don’t even remotely compare to game’s full score.

This soundtrack was the first to be printed, and was made in reference to the Saturn version of QuoVadis. A later print of the game was made for the PlayStation version, and there is also another soundtrack covering music from the six drama albums released in relation to the game (a low-budget way to avoid making a TV anime series). Somehow, this album seems to be the most widely circulated among the three soundtracks, so if you’re interested, this is a good place to start. It can be found for cheap prices on Yahoo! Japan.
