If you read my scathing review for the Spectral Force “Lovely Wickedness” soundtrack (which was actually printed after this second one), you may be surprised to find that I have much better things to say about this soundtrack. However, if you are surprised, you shouldn’t be: look up. See that? Kobayashi only contributed two songs to the album. And though Ryuji Iuchi may himself be a “no-name” in the world of VGM composers, his work far outclasses the work of Kobayashi-san.
“Opening of the Heart” is a moody and melancholy opening theme, and it sets the tone for what is a much more serious, “let’s get down to business” kind of soundtrack. From here on out, it’s instrumental, and it’s pretty good. Iuchi’s style is reminiscent to Hitoshi Sakimoto, especially in terms of instrument choice. Orchestra bells, harps, snare drums, and high-pitched woodwinds are found in many of the songs here.
The tracks are ordered systematically, as you can see, with different melodies for Fields and W.A.Z.A.s, whatever those are. Most of these songs are either upbeat and wild, or else mid-paced, solid, somber tunes. It’s pleasant, and the synth sounds pretty good.
Add to that the two arranged tracks at the end (higher quality synth), and you have one very good soundtrack. The bad news? This thing is mighty hard to find. The good news? Team Entertainment printed a “Best of” Spectral Force album, so most of the good stuff is on there too. As for this rare print, I’d assume it’s worth a fair chunk of change, so collectors, get your E-wallets ready.
