Star Ocean: The Second Story Arrange Album

Review by · May 5, 2001

Note: “Resolusion” is a typo on the tracklist. The error is not made on the OST, but is found for the arrange album’s tracklist.

I liked the SO2 original soundtrack…I REALLY liked it. So, what do I think of the arrange album? Let’s find out…

First of all, the arrange album isn’t too arranged at all. It’s still all synth, and a lot of it is taken right out of the OST. Different drum loops are added (this is most obvious in “Sacred Song”), some new synth voices are thrown in, and the tracks are MUCH longer (and there is a difference through each loop of the main theme of each track).

This idea worked out very well on just about every song. Personally, I don’t like the arrangements of the ending track (We Form in Crystals) when comparing it to the original. I would’ve been fine if they left the track exactly the same and put it on again. Instead, they added some drum loops and you can’t hear that crazy violin-solo as well in this version. Nonetheless, it’s still something new and different, so I will listen to this track from time to time.

An interesting fact on this soundtrack is that it was actually released two weeks BEFORE the original soundtrack…so, Sakuraba was able to pick the “better” tracks to arrange without fan input…which isn’t surprising, because all of the tracks picked are REALLY good. If you liked the OST’s music (whether or not you even own the OST) this album is for you.
