The musical compositions of Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata, like a fine wine, are intensely savorable. To the listener, each additional taste reveals subtle complexities, intricate emotions, and deepens one’s appreciation of the work. Mr. Sakimoto and Mr. Iwata demonstrate their ability to capture the feeling of the moment, whether it be fragility, solitude, courage, or triumph, and release it in instrumental form. As fans of the Ogre Battle OST and Final Fantasy Tactics OST already know, these gentlemen will settle for nothing but the best in musical accompaniment.
However, their techniques have matured over the years, and not surprisingly, the Stella Deus BGM ReArrange Album manages to soar above and beyond all expectations. Each of the eight tracks has been completely re-envisioned, refined, and remastered. The result is a feast for the senses. In particular, Holy Spirit Piano Version, an instrumental rendition of the original vocal theme, can be described as nothing less than enchanting. For those who have experienced the game and its distinct themes of despair/hopelessness, the delicate melody immediately invokes heightened feelings of nostalgia. Each arrangement clearly illustrates the talent of these composers, always feeling fresh and overflowing with inspiration. But don’t listen to me…listen to the samples! They’re worth a thousand words.
The Stella Deus BGM ReArrange Album is a masterpiece. Unfortunately, it was a promotional album in Japan; limited copies were distributed with the initial pressing of Stella Deus (which explains the “Not For Sale” marking on the cover). I give it, however, the absolute highest recommendation. Keep watching eBay for this one…!
