Long may she reign. Galaxy Princess Zorana is a visual novel/stats-raising political sim and follow-up to the acclaimed indie title Long Live The Queen. Zorana, a sheltered and spoiled intergalactic princess, becomes entangled in a deadly succession race. Her father, the evil overlord of a nefarious spacefaring empire, dies under mysterious circumstances. Can an untested and unprepared woman gather enough support to rule, or will she become a casualty in someone else’s rise? The answer lies in the player’s machinations within a challenging but rewarding gameplay loop that sets Galaxy Princess Zorana apart.
First up, be prepared to see creative variations of the “you died” screen when playing Galaxy Princess Zorana. The game’s vibrant, colorful veneer masks brutal difficulty and a steep learning curve. Based on your decisions and skill checks, you might not make it past the first few rounds before assassins appear. Or, you could reach the endgame only to lose the votes you need to become empress. If that happens, your only option is to start over and use lessons from past playthroughs to devise stronger strategies and gambits. This process repeats until you claim decisive victory, but even then, more secrets and routes await discovery.
This seemingly repetitive gameplay loop is actually where Galaxy Princess Zorana shines. While the learning curve can initially seem overwhelming and early replays might be more frustrating than not, an addictive element rises from the challenge. You’ll want to keep going forward every time there’s a game over, just to see what might happen if you chose a different tactic at a certain story juncture or character interaction.
Galaxy Princess Zorana pushes you to keep trying until you succeed, while you find a playstyle that best fits you. The rush of victory can be thrilling in and of itself, but throw in a myriad number of ways to approach various scenarios as well as to unlock different story scenes and secrets, and you’ll be planning to go just a few more rounds.
Speaking of the story, Zorana starts out as an inexperienced character who hasn’t even completed her rites of adulthood. This is clear from her limited starting skills. To improve her abilities, you select two classes each game round in subjects relevant to governing an intergalactic empire. For example, rhetoric improves diplomatic skills, and empathy makes it easier to understand how others feel, allowing Zorana to tailor her interactions. Reflexes help in tense situations, while knowledge of spaceflight signals competence in military matters.
Zorana’s mood shifts based on choices and interactions, such as adopting a baby or playing with a pet. Improving her mood with activities—like exercising to boost determination—earns bonus points for that day’s lessons. Managing Zorana’s mood helps maximize lesson benefits, as higher abilities let you pass tougher skill checks, which affect whether you gain an elector’s support or steer plot points in your favor.
Trying to learn every skill is a mistake you’ll realize early on, since you won’t acquire high enough skill levels to pass many advanced checks scattered throughout Galaxy Princess Zorana. There are often multiple ways to approach situations, so failing one or two skill checks doesn’t mean you fail outright. By specializing in a specific field, you can unlock the “closet” option, where Zorana can wear unique outfits to boost stats in particular areas. For example, a pilot’s suit increases your chances of winning space flight challenges.
Aside from Zorana’s basic lessons, imperial knowledge pools open, offering information on political subjects. For example, spirituality helps you understand the empire’s religious practices and influence the devout. Galactic relations show how different cultures interact with the empire. Media covers core PR skills to gain support. You can study these during lessons instead of focusing on basic social stats. Alternatively, manipulate the elector pool by hiring cabinet members, likely securing their votes and gaining their expertise as your own. Certain electors have higher skills in specific fields, so expect some trial and error at first. Still, managing stats and details to optimize playthroughs is part of Galaxy Princess Zorana’s charm.
Charm and flattery aren’t the only ways to win an elector’s support in Galaxy Princess Zorana. You can investigate a character’s background for blackmail material or offer a bribe to secure their vote. Since Zorana is nearly an adult, she can propose marriage after becoming empress to an elector or their associate to sway votes. Your perception of the marriage, in-game actions, and the fiancée’s view of Zorana can greatly affect your chance of a successful ending.
I initially delayed using a proposal and missed its benefits. On my first victorious playthrough, I used this mechanic with a character previously ambivalent or hostile toward Zorana. The successful proposal revealed the character’s depth, and the marriage was unexpectedly affectionate and understanding, given my decisions.
Of course, Zorana’s actions are scrutinized wherever she goes. Your actions will affect how characters feel about her, for better or worse. Advancing one star system’s influence may hurt how another’s electors perceive the empress-to-be. If they’re hostile, you could lose a vote or face an assassination attempt, so always heed your security detail.
Sometimes, you can avoid mishaps by changing Zorana’s mood with the activity wheel or by passing skill checks. Cabinet members who dislike her might also betray her. Visiting certain planets after others may have political consequences. Electors get along with some constituents but make enemies with others, so the web of connections is complex and influences support. Galaxy Princess Zorana‘s attention to detail throughout is impressive.
Visually, Galaxy Princess Zorana uses bright colors and expressive characters effectively. The alien designs stand out, and the storybook-like CG illustrations enhance a successful ending. The UI is clean and appealing, easily navigable with native Steam Deck controls. Small text can be an issue, so playing docked or on a large monitor is best. Sound effects excel, and the soundtrack suits the game’s storytelling and ambiance. There’s no voice acting, but I was too busy reading and plotting to notice. With its narrative variation and depth, the replayability is remarkable—no playthrough is the same unless you purposely repeat choices. The script is impressively error-free. Extras include an achievement checklist, CG and epilogue art collection, and a quest list.
Galaxy Princess Zorana is an addictive, choice-heavy visual novel with a compelling, though sometimes frustrating, gameplay loop and excellent replayability. I initially struggled to learn the mechanics, but I always enjoyed myself. After my first successful run, I immediately began planning alternative decisions for my next playthrough and wishlisted Long Live The Queen. If that doesn’t show the stellar appeal of Galaxy Princess Zorana, I’m not sure what will. This game absolutely has my vote!
