Our weirdly active December rolls on in this edition of RPGs Coming This Week, headlined by the latest in Japan’s anime-to-RPG pipeline. Rounding out this diverse collection are two indie releases and a handful of ports as we head into the holidays. Read on to learn where you might spend your hard-earned holiday bonus!

Paper Perjury – December 9th (Windows)

Paper Perjury is a pixel-graphic mystery adventure similar to Ace Attorney, in which you step into the role of newly hired police clerk Justina Smith, figuring out how a series of seemingly unrelated crimes connect. Can Justina figure out the mystery or will it remain unsolved?

Paper Perjury features a city teeming with colorful residents, some of whom may not be trustworthy or helpful. Every character has a wide array of dialogue to cycle through when conversing with them, and you can even befriend a cat! Crime scenes contain crucial evidence that’ll help solve the tricky puzzles blocking your investigations. As an Ace Attorney and VN fan, Paper Perjury has been on my radar for a while now. I’m looking forward to getting my sleuthing on when it releases later this week!

Fairy Tail 2 – December 11th (PS5, PS4, Switch, Windows)

Fairy Tail 2 is a new action-focused spinoff of the popular shonen manga and anime series, and a sequel to 2020’s Fairy Tail.

This follow-up sees the found family and friends of the magical Fairy Tail guild preparing for the greatest battle of their lives, as a nefarious empire declares war on humanity. Can our heroes defeat the fearsome Spriggan 12 and their diabolical leader in time? The game covers the series’ final story arc and adds a brand new chapter to the tale.

I admit to not being familiar with the Fairy Tail universe, but this second game’s colorful character designs and more action-focused combat has me curious. Koei Tecmo and Gust have made some enjoyable games, so here’s to hoping Fairy Tail 2 will continue that trend. RPG fans who enjoy the anime/manga series should certainly keep a lookout for when the release date gets closer this week!

Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated – December 12th (Windows)

Breath of Death VII: The Beginning: Reanimated is a remake of a 2010 title of almost the same name by Zeboyd Games. This reimagining is being handled by one-half of the original dev team, Bill Stiernberg, who amicably left Zeboyd in 2023, seemingly to spin up his new independent studio Shadow Layer Games.

Breath of Death is essentially a parody of JRPGs; their style, tropes, and pitfalls are all on show in a game that also offers a decent RPG experience in its own right. While the original version leaned heavily into the aesthetics and playstyle of seminal 8-bit JRPGs — specifically Dragon Quest — This Reanimated version leaps forward into a decidedly 16-bit, SNES-like presentation. Other than the visual overhaul, Reanimated is set to feature a new OST, varied game modes, and a small set of quality-of-life features.

If this game interests you but you want a feel for the original, may I suggest checking out our own Lucas Greene‘s playthrough?

Xuan Yuan Sword: The Gate of Firmament – December 13th (PS5)

Xuan Yuan Sword: The Gate of Firmament provides the definitive version of a standalone title in the Xuan Yuan series. My exposure to this critically acclaimed Taiwanese series is limited, but I adored the seventh game and I’m hopeful this one proves similar when it releases this week on the PS5!
