RPGFan Games of the Year 2023: Best Animal or Mascot Character

GOTY 2023 Best Animal or Mascot Torgal Final Fantasy XVI

Winner: Torgal (Final Fantasy XVI)

Torgal is the goodest of boys. He’s cute as a button as a puppy and handsome (but still adorable) as an adult. He is fiercely loyal to his people and nigh inseparable with Clive in particular. When the two are separated, Torgal spends over a decade searching for Clive and gathers every possession he can find in anticipation of the day they are reunited. In battle, Torgal is a constant companion. He attacks on command, routinely saves Clive’s life, and he even has superpowers. But the best thing about Torgal is that you can pet and play fetch with him whenever you want. We rate him a 15/10.

Runner-Up: Scratch (Baldur’s Gate III)

In contrast to the wonderdog that is Torgal, Scratch is merely an ordinary white mutt. Still, from his sad pre-rescue state to the tear-draining conversation you have if you’re savvy enough to use Speak With Animals, he surely scratched his way into many hearts. He becomes a friendly presence around camp and a reprieve from all the troubles of trying to stay alive in Faerûn with a mind flayer parasite on the brain. Not only can you pet the dog in Baldur’s Gate III, but you can also play fetch with him, made extra endearing when he comes up to you with the notification you’ve received “ball.” Scratch is a good boy.
