Bump of Chicken – supernova / Karma

Review by · February 15, 2007

Before the game Tales of the Abyss was even released in Japan, a single was released. The band, Bump of Chicken, is a well-known J-Rock group who has stepped into gaming territory. The band’s leader, Motoo Fujiwara, did a few songs for the game, and his band did the opening song “Karma.” As a bonus, the single included one of their hits “Supernova” (well really it’s more like “Karma” is the bonus, but for us gamers, Supernova is the extra material). I never heard of them before, but listening to these two songs, I am interested in hearing more of their works.

“Supernova” is a song that is not featured in the game, but it’s a very nice song. Motoo Fujiwara is a great vocalist, putting a lot of soul into the song. This style of music makes me feel like I’m in a concert. The simple but pleasant melody with soft vocals can make anyone wave their hands in the air back and forth. It’s a very nice bonus for the single.

“Karma” is a very good opening song, and I like it more out of the two songs. It’s something like a typical J-Rock style with heavy guitars and strong vocals, but it’s very well done. It has a very solid melody that I was instantly engaged in, and a very good vocalist to complement it.

I enjoyed the single a lot, and I am impressed by this J-rock band. With a superb opening that is not included in the OST along and a very nice bonus song, this single has some value. Check it out.
