Haruka Shimotsuki – Last Signpost

Review by · March 13, 2010

The ending for Last Rebellion wass definitely not a happy ending. Thus, the ending theme needed to have the right balance of melancholy with catchy pop sensibility. Last Signpost by Haruka Shimotsuki certainly delivers here and may just be the best piece of music from the game. The instruments are nicely balanced and layered, plus the vocals are lovely to listen to. Even better than Last Signpost is The Song You Shouldn’t Hear, the other song on this single. Shimotsuki uses a variety of vocal styles on this song, which has a variety of unconventional, yet still appealing, melodies and harmonies. Great song all around and easily my favorite of all the Last Rebellion songs I heard over both singles.

The off-vocal versions stand alone well and allow me to hear some of the instrumental layers I did not detect at first, but the songs are definitely preferable with vocals (at least to me.) Once again, although most players would regard Last Rebellion as a terrible game, these songs are fantastic.
