Dreamfall – The Longest Journey EP features 4 songs by the group Magnet (a group that Funcom’s press release touts for having songs on TV shows such as “The O.C.”). The songs feature interesting, atmospheric instrumentation influenced by wide varieties of world music. The parts are all layered very well with plenty of space so no one instrument overpowers the other. The vocalist has a breathy style and delivers interesting lyrics. Unfortunately, though the music is has good qualities on a technical level, I found the songwriting lacking. The songs were rather boring and very forgettable. I also thought the vocalist’s breathy style was rather weak on certain parts of songs where belting would have given the songs more punch and power. This group has talent; all they need to do is tighten up the songwriting and have the vocalist open up his to sound really fierce.
The opening track is the one inspired by the game: the other tracks are found on other albums by Magnet.
This EP was released with the limited edition package of the game, but some online music shops are selling the EP separately. Considering the fact that “Magnet” is backed up by Warner Music, if you want it, you should be able to find it.
