Hello, dear readers, and welcome to the latest installment of Coming This Week with RPGFan! January is already on its way out, and you know what that means: Oscar season is also wrapping up! Who will take home the gold? My money is on Bong Joon-ho’s masterpiece Parasite, but seeing as we live in the Darkest Timeline, then maybe we’ll have to contend with Academy Award winning director Todd Phillips. (Seriously, 11 nominations for that Joker thing? Really?) Anyway, you’re not hear to read my lukewarm movie takes. Nah, you want the spicy video game news! Let’s get cracking.
Ember – January 21st (Switch)
Ember is an open-world, classic-style RPG that was originally released in 2016. That world is founded on some charming lore about powerful druidic individuals called Lightbringers who called light from the embers to aid the world. You play as a resurrected Lightbringer, and can make your way through a varied landscape in terms of the environment and the world’s inhabitants. Pick it up in its new form on the 21st!
Temtem – January 21st (Early Access, Windows)
Do you like Pokémon? Do you like MMORPGs? Do you wish there was a Pokémon MMORPG? Well, Temtem might offer the closest equivalent to that long-desired experience. The premise, on its surface, is very reminiscent of Game Freak’s iconic franchise, with a young player character endeavoring to become a Temtem tamer, exploring the world and battling other tamers on their journey. The game enters early access on January 21st.
Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception/Mask of Truth – January 23rd (Windows)
The strategy RPG genre has seen a boost in popularity lately, thanks in no small part to the success of the Fire Emblem series’ newfangled blend of tactics and dating sim social mechanics. Well, if you’re into that sort of thing, then the Utawarerumono games might be just the ticket! These games lean hard into their visual novel sensibilities and offer a robust tactical experience as well. Both Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and its follow-up Mask of Truth will be hitting Windows PCs on the 23rd. Be sure to check out our reviews for both titles (Deception and Truth) if you’d like to learn more.
Kingdom Hearts III ReMind – January 23rd (PS4)
It seems to strange that roughly a year has passed since the release of Kingdom Hearts III. What was once a long-awaited dream game for fans is now just… a game, and regardless of what you thought of the final product (for the record, I loved it, and we reviewed it positively), many fans found themselves wanting more. Well, continuing the grand tradition of Final Mix-style content updates, Square Enix is adding a bunch of new stuff to Kingdom Hearts III with the ReMind DLC. New boss fights, more story content, cameos from beloved characters, and more await those who want to take another trip into the zany world of Kingdom Hearts. Keep an eye out for more Kingdom Hearts coverage from us!
…and that’s a wrap! Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ve got to go catch up on the Oscar nominees I’ve missed (like Irish Man, the best superhero film of 2019). Catch you all next time!
