I’m starting to think I might be the only one who likes The Dark Pictures Anthology series by Supermassive Games. While they’ve certainly earned their reputation for being a little buggy and extremely cheesy, I’ve enjoyed my time with these interactive haunted house rides, and am really looking forward to diving back into the Curator’s creepy repository with the next entry, House of Ashes.

A new trailer for House of Ashes dropped during the recent Summer Games Fest broadcast. It’s age-restricted, so we could embed a big gray block below, but you’d be better just watching on YouTube.

The place… Iraq. The time… 2003. In the shadow of the Zagros mountains a military unit comes under fire from Iraqi forces. The resulting firefight causes an earth tremor where both sides fall into the ruins of a buried Sumerian temple. With all communication with the outside world severed, our protagonists are trapped in a terrifying underworld they must navigate to escape – unaware that something ancient and evil has awakened in the shadows and has found new prey to hunt. Horrific discoveries and impossible decisions now face the survivors as they strive to escape the terrifying threat they’ve awakened. Will they each prioritize their own survival, or put aside their fears and personal rivalries to fight together as one against these underworld monsters?

I have to say, I am very intrigued by Supermassive’s choice of setting for this one, and what this could mean given this series’ penchant for… let’s charitably say controversial plot twists. In keeping with series tradition, House of Ashes has a fancy collector’s edition you can order: the Pazuzu Edition comes with a copy of House of Ashes, a figurine of one of the featured underworld creatures, a metal pin, an art print, stickers, and access to the Curator’s Cut DLC.

The Dark Pictures Anthology: House of Ashes will launch in the Americas on October 22nd, 2021, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. Keep an eye on the game’s official website, and stay tuned to RPGFan for more information!
