For RPGs Coming This Week, I don’t usually base my headline on a given week’s “Also Coming This Week” section, but the opportunity and my desire to make this reference was just too strong. But as far as brand-new games, we have a long-awaited followup to Minecraft Dungeons, another followup I’m excited about with black-and-white photography sim TOEM 2, the charming musical and magical Songs of Glimmerwick, and Geralt returns looking better than ever.

Minecraft Dungeons II – September 29th (PS5, XBX, Switch, Switch 2, Windows)

Sandbox juggernaut Minecraft‘s Diablo-inspired voxel action RPG Minecraft Dungeons returns with an expanded sequel this week, Minecraft Dungeons II. Although RPGFan’s John Tucker found the original didn’t bring the series’ characteristic innovation and creativity to the action-based dungeon crawling genre, it was still a good time (especially with friends or family). The original saw six different expansions with new areas to explore and loot to find, so Minecraft Dungeons II has big, blocky boots to fill! Thankfully, Mojang has made some significant improvements for the sequel, splitting armor up into four distinct pieces to ensure character builds have more variety, a revamped visual style, and the ability to jump (perhaps introducing more verticality to the levels as well). If you are looking for a rowdy, Gauntlet-style multiplayer RPG, Minecraft Dungeons II seems poised to offer hours of family-friendly fun.

TOEM 2 – September 29th ( PS5, XBX, Switch, Switch 2, Windows, macOS, Linux)

The long-awaited, monochromatic, picture-taking adventure TOEM 2 launches this Tuesday! Our very own Jerry Williams enjoyed the previous title’s mix of polygonal diorama environments, hand-drawn 2D characters, and detailed photography mechanics. TOEM 2 isn’t a drastic reinvention compared to its predecessor, but it promises a wider variety of secret-filled environments and a whole host of upgraded camera mechanics to take the best black-and-white photos possible. There’s no time limit or other restrictions, so you can take your time immersing yourself in the cozy world and find hidden secrets at your own pace. Filling out a stamp book has never been so fun!

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered – September 29th (PS5, XBX, Switch 2, Windows)

Just revealed weeks ago at gamescom, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered launches this week with a host of improvements. It was already surprising that CD Projekt RED was returning to Geralt’s most famous adventure with new DLC (Songs of the Past is coming next year), but it turns out once they started working on The Witcher 3 again, they wanted to spiffy up some parts of the base game. It is, inexplicably, 11 years old now!
This Remastered edition features improved visuals, gameplay updates like enhanced movement on foot and on mounts, revamped combat, skill tree, UI, and quest tracking, support for PS5 Pro and Switch 2, and more, which we detailed in August. It even includes the game’s first two DLC expansions (previously sold separately). But arguably, the best part is that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered is a free update for owners of the original, and if you didn’t have the DLCs, you get those free, too.
See, this is the way to inspire goodwill in your players when you release a performance-minded update or new platform support. Square Enix should take notes.

Songs of Glimmerwick – September 30th (Windows)

Eastshade Studios’ previous title, Eastshade, was a gorgeous painterly walking sim released in 2019, which our reviewer Tris Mendoza described as “an impressive interactive art piece that might not necessarily change your life, but may change the way you look at life.”
The studio’s next title launches this week, and Songs of Glimmerwick is also beautiful, but in a completely different way than their previous title. Which makes sense, as it’s also a genre shift, described specifically as a story-driven RPG with town and farming elements. Set in the titular land of Glimmerwick, your character is enrolled in a magical university, where magic is rooted in music. Your flute is the key to exploring the island, taking care of gardening, and maybe making friends! I’m guessing you can make those friends and attend after school clubs without making everything about your flute, but it’s always nice to have a talent, that’s how we get people to like us, right?
Right?
Uh, anyway, like any good town or farming sim, Glimmerwick also changes throughout the seasons and will have plenty of festivals and “witchy hijinks” to discover as well. It sounds like there’s something in here for fans of Stardew Valley, Wylde Flowers, and maybe even a bit of Persona.

Also Coming This Week

Octopath Traveler I & II – October 1st (Switch 2)
In mid-July, Square Enix suddenly brought their hit HD-2D RPGs, Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II to Switch 2 players in Japan. These versions launch this week in the West, with standard pricing of $59.99 USD each, or as a bundle for $74.99. Now, look, I don’t want to ding Square Enix twice in the same article… but I will. Because these are both incredible games (Jono scored the first game an 88, while Zach gave the sequel a 91 and Editors’ Choice Award), and it’s great to see them on Switch 2 with improved performance over their Switch 1 counterparts. But as always, Square Enix offers no upgrade discount to Switch 1 players, and save files are also incompatible between versions, so even if you wanted to buy either game again to continue your current save, that’s impossible.
They don’t have to give away upgrades for free like CDPR (Nintendo doesn’t either, but they include a lot of updates in those $9.99 upgrades), but asking for full price and making the save files incompatible on all of their Switch 2 titles is so user-hostile, and I simply don’t understand it. I know you can’t run a business only on consumer goodwill, but it sure can help.
In short, I recommend following Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II on DekuDeals or a similar site and waiting for a sale. As unfriendly as these Switch 2 releases are, at least Square Enix routinely puts their games on sale. (They’re 60–70% off on Steam today, for that matter.)

Gothic II Complete Classic – September 29th (PS5, XBX)
THQ Nordic’s remaster of Piranha Byte’s classic Eurojank RPG Gothic II Complete Classic debuts on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, two years after the first two titles were bundled on Nintendo Switch as Gothic Classic Khorinis Saga. This version does offer higher resolution and better visual upgrades than that release, so if you enjoyed Gothic 1 Remake earlier this year, this may be a good way to experience the sequel.
