So, what exactly is Final Fantasy N Generation? For those who aren’t familiar with the many Final Fantasy music CDs that have been published, this is a selection of pieces from the various arranged albums spanning Final Fantasy I through VI: thus the N Generation title, meaning those games originally released for Nintendo systems. Although everything here can be found on previously released import albums (this is technically an alternate print of Japan’s “FF 1987 – 1994” album), and considering this CD has been published and released in the U.S., this is a wonderful opportunity for new fans to get their hands on the music easily and cheaply.
As far as the music goes, it can best be described as a domestic version of the Final Fantasy Potion CDs. Aside from the fact that many of the pieces are different from those that are featured on the Potion albums, it has the same relaxed feel. Yet, unlike Potion, vocal pieces from Final Fantasy III: Eternal Legend of the Wind and Final Fantasy V: Dear Friends are featured (most likely because they’re in English, but it’s still nice to see them included). Along with these are two Scenes taken from Final Fantasy Symphonic Suite, which feature orchestral performances of Final Fantasy I and II themes. My only complaint is that only two tracks were taken from Final Fantasy VI. But, this is only a minor concern, and it’s still nice to see pieces showcased that were never given notice before. With so many other excellent selections, N Generation proves to be a nice collection of arrangements.
If you’re a collector like I am, and have most of the original imported albums, then you’ll most likely want this for its collectible value only. However, there are many fans out there that are unable to import CDs or order online, in which case this is an excellent start. Like many of Tokyopop’s releases, you should be able to find this at your local game specialty store.
