Pioneering video game composer Yoko Shimomura will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the Game Developers Choice Awards, part of the annual Game Developers Conference in March. Since beginning her 35+ year career in the late 1980s as part of the Capcom Sound Team, Shimomura has made many solo and group contributions to the scores of iconic games.

Shimomura has devoted most of her energies to our favorite genre, RPGs, and for this she has gained much praise and admiration. Shimomura is the main composer for the Kingdom Hearts series and many of the Mario RPGs, including the soundtrack for the original Super Mario RPG. A more recent and large-scale soundtrack she did was for Final Fantasy XV (video above).

You can listen to our 2021 Rhythm Encounter podcast devoted to the works of Yoko Shimomura, or look back some 10 years to when former music editor Stephen Meyerink had the opportunity to interview the legend herself.

Claton (yes no "Y") is an RPG obsessed News Editor. Claton fell in love with the genre whilst watching his childhood friend spam GF summons in FF VIII; thinking "wow these graphics are just like real life. Is this really a game"? He’s been chasing that feeling of awe and wonder ever since. Who knows? Maybe he’ll find it right here with RPGFan. When he’s not writing for RPGFan, you’ll find him nonchalantly leaning against the ballroom wall being the “best looking guy here.” …whatever.
